Every spring, the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang – the medieval capital of Upper Mustang at 3,840 meters in Nepal's Himalayan rain shadow – comes alive for the Tiji Festival. Monks of the Sakya lineage perform three days of elaborate masked dances, sacred chants, and ritual ceremonies dating back over 400 years. The festival re-enacts the story of Dorje Jono, a Buddhist deity who defeats his demon father to save the Kingdom of Mustang from drought and destruction. Watched by the Mustang royal family, local villagers, and a small number of travelers who make the journey each year, it is one of the most authentic and least commercialised cultural events in Asia.
Getting there requires a Restricted Area Permit, a licensed Nepali trekking agency, and roughly 8–10 days of travel from Kathmandu. The permit limits visitor numbers, which keeps the festival genuinely unspoiled. Getaway Nepal Adventure has been organising Tiji Festival treks for years, with all logistics, permits, guides, and accommodation managed from our Kathmandu office. We offer every format: on foot, by jeep, by motorbike, or by helicopter.
